Readying electricity systems to power a resilient, affordable, low-carbon energy future

Electricity is a foundational enabler for many transition pathways. Making sure we have a grid that can keep pace with growing demand and maintain affordability is essential.

To compete in a global net-zero economy, Canada needs to produce two to three times more electricity than it generates today, and deliver it to every corner of the country reliably. As the largest provincial contributor to GHG emissions from electricity, Alberta's grid will need the greatest change to close the gap. Lowering the cost of energy will increase Albertans' prosperity, the competitiveness of Alberta's industry, and attract more jobs, investment and innovation.

The Energy Futures Lab is making sure the grid keeps pace. Through our work in this area, we're convening leaders from every corner of the value chain, sparking open, action-oriented dialogue, and forging the collaborations that move ideas off the page and into the field. Our transparent, targeted analysis exposes blind spots and turns ambition into practical, region-specific build-out plans—so Canadian communities can power a smarter, more prosperous future.
